Solarwinds Inc. Head Geek in Austin, Texas
SolarWinds is seeking a technology evangelist (aptly named a SolarWinds Head Geek), for our Systems and Applications solutions offering. This person embodies a rare combination of deep technical skills and a passion for communication. Head Geeks represent the voice of our customers inside SolarWinds, and the voice of SolarWinds outside it.
A Head Geek fits into the unique SolarWinds "bottoms-up" marketing approach, establishing trust and credibility as a trusted advisor to the IT pros on the front lines of IT monitoring, maintenance, management, and support. A Head Geek will facilitate an open dialog to challenge the IT pros' status quo and helps them consider the right solutions to their toughest challenges (even if said solutions do not always involve SolarWinds products). Ultimately, a Head Geek builds critical mass support for SolarWinds solutions and helps establish them as technical standards in the IT market through presentations, webinars, press briefings, event presence, thought leadership articles, blogs, videos, demos, and participation on social media platforms. This person also serves as diplomat between SolarWinds marketing and the potential buyer/existing customer, providing valuable insight and feedback from our user base to help craft and shape future products and effective marketing campaigns.
SolarWinds is a fast-paced, results-oriented, dynamic public company with a strong vision in a growing global market.
5-10+ years of hands-on experience in IT, particularly in the areas of IT operations management, application monitoring, systems management, and service delivery.
Strong communication skills, both written and verbal; must enjoy and embrace being in front of an audience.
Proven ability to be self-directed, be internally motivated, and be an independent thinker – and yet, also flexible enough to shift and change when requested.
Experience in and comfort with presenting technical information to large groups in both formal and informal settings, including but not limited to: on-camera recordings, live online webcasts, podcasts, and chat sessions, in-booth demos and conversations, and user group meetings.
Preexisting history of community participation and established connections and networks in leading forums.
Permanent residence in Austin, though a truly outstanding candidate willing to make regular visits as requested to Austin from other markets may be considered.
Bachelor of Science or Arts in a degree requiring logical and analytical reasoning and problem-solving, such as computer science, engineering, applied mathematics, and underwater basket-weaving – or equivalent work experience.
The ideal candidate will also have:
Preexisting social/blog identity and audience with a heavy focus on IT operations management, systems management, or application monitoring themes, with good follower sentiment.
Microsoft, VMware, or other field-related MVP status.
