The Product Manager Free Tools is responsible for market analysis, "pain points" research, and defining a product roadmap that will drive awareness, technical demand, and traffic to SolarWinds Orion products. You will help define and execute on a business plan and work with Orion product management to define mini applications which upsell to flagship systems and network management products. In this role, you will also work with product marketing, demand generation, and SolarWinds Community (i.e., THWACK) teams on GTM activities.

The successful candidate will have a proven track record understanding various technology domains including systems, virtualization, storage, network, applications, databases, etc. and making plans that solve administrator problems and frustrations in the associated domains. SolarWinds emphasizes strong growth and profitability; therefore, the ideal candidate must be proficient in making trade off decisions that maximize impact and return on investment. This product management position requires a blend of technical and marketing knowledge, sales acumen, and people skills.


You are truly the General Manager for your area (Free Tools). This means it's up to you to define a successful business strategy and product roadmap, to work with Engineering and other stakeholders to deliver results. You are also responsible for evangelizing your products, defining roadmaps, working with the Product Owner on breaking down user stories, articulating upsell, conducting end-user surveys, and enabling our unique sales motion.


You will be working with a tightly coupled cross-functional team of highly talented and experienced professionals. There is a high focus on execution and organization, but we don't let formal process get in the way of opportunity or experimentation.

  • Develop and execute a compelling and demand generating product vision, strategy, and roadmap for SolarWinds Free Tools

  • Deliver delightful user experiences and solutions

  • Operationalize the delivery of the vision through projects, roadmaps, feature definition, releases, and go-to-market plans, with an emphasis on compressed timelines and rapid time to market.

  • Build a successful business with discernable and incremental results (based on demand, downloads and new to franchise leads), by continuously focusing on solving "pain points" in the industry and offering easy to install, high value free tools.

  • Collaborate with Product Marketing, Corporate Marketing, Demand Generation, and Sales to build and execute business plans for maximizing demand and pipeline growth

  • Be a product evangelist with prospects, system and network administrators, customers, partners, and employees


  • 3+ years software product management experience in a system or network technology domain or adjacent industries with a focus on monitoring, administration or operations.

  • Experience developing, administrating and/or managing common applications in the datacenter or within IT (Microsoft applications such as Office 365/Dynamics/Share Point, VMware, Oracle databases, Citrix, etc.)

  • "Hands on" knowledge of various management protocols (SNMP, WMI, SMI-S, CLI, ReST, SQL, VMware APIs, etc.) and system administration tools (powershell, SSH, nmap, lsof, iostat, curl, dig, etc.)

  • Experience driving great user experiences that solve critical customer problems

  • Proven skills as a problem solver and able to articulate IT frustrations

  • Solid communicator across a span of technical and business stakeholders.

  • Track record influencing across an organization to gain buy-in and execute.

  • Track record balancing the conceptualization of strategic initiatives with tactical execution.
